The Devil Makes Three are known to inspire boot stomping along to their Americana sounds, and they are as gritty outlaw country as they are sweet moonshine bluegrass. Dark and haunting like the ghost of sounds past, The Devil Makes Three makes even a freshly penned creation reek of old tobacco barns, tin-roofed front porches, and fog rolling through a history soaked hollow. NC Music Magazine photographers Tarver Shelton and Justin Barnett both captured The Devil Makes Three at Haw River Ballroom at Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw on Thursday, February 1st.
One of the best examples of what inspires The Devil Makes Three is their 2017 release Redemption & Ruin. This album of covers spans eras, regions, genres and styles in a fashion full of The Devil Makes Three’s own interpretation. From Tampa Red and His Chicago Five’s 1937 recording “I’m Gonna Get High” and Darby and Tarleton’s “Down In The Valley” recorded in 1927, to “Champagne and Reefer” by Muddy Waters and “Come On Up to the House” by Tom Waits, Road to Redemption covers both sinful and sacred ground. The song choices on Road to Redemption speak volumes about who The Devil Makes Three are as a band, and all those influences come out in a breath of fresh air when this trio is on stage.
