PREVIEW: The Big What? - 8/8-8/10 - Shakori Community Arts Center - Pittsboro, NC

The six-piece Burlington, NC-based interplanetary rocking-pop-funk band,Big Something, has gained national notoriety as of late. Their touring schedule is getting heavier. And their reach is getting broader. But their love for the North Carolina music scene, and for the loyal NC fan base that have supported them during the past decade, really shines at their Big What? Festival at Shakori Hills Community Arts Center in Pittsboro, NC. This is the eighth year of Big What?, and the band also organizes a smaller one-day event at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington during the summer, which fans have affectionately dubbed “Little Big What?”.

This year’s three-day-throw-down features 20+ bands, more than half of them from North Carolina, and the diverse range of sounds represents the varied influences within Big Something. One thing in common with a majority of the bands on this years lineup is that they utilize improvisation to produce danceable grooves and sonic landscapes. Some call them “Jambands”.

Since the music goes till almost 2am on the two main stages, and there are Late Night Mystery Stages that go past 2am each night, you better bring more than one pair of dancing shoes. Because you are gonna wear the soles off your first pair by the time the sun comes up Saturday morning.

Fun Fact: Big Something went into the studio this past June and they will debuting six new songs at this years Big What? Festival.
