PREVIEW: Lockn' Festival 2019

PREVIEW: Lockn' Festival 2019

When Lockn’ first opened it gates in 2013, it was clear the festival was a winner that was built around the jam band scene and Grateful Dead related acts. Original members of the Grateful Dead have played at every Lockn’, and in every configuration imaginable. Lockn’ has featured Further, Bob Weir & Ratdog, Phil Lesh & Friends, Billy & The Kids, Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band, and Dead & Company. This year, it’s Bob Weir & Wolf Brothers.

In addition to the presence of a Grateful Dead related act, there have also always been bands that play multiple sets over multiple nights. The first year of the festival, Further performed 4 sets over 3 nights, String Cheese Incident performed 3 sets over 3 nights, and Widespread Panic performed 2 sets over 2 nights. That repeat approach dug deep into the fan-bases of all three of those major jam bands.

Each year since that first festival, one or more big jam bands played multiple sets, and on multiple days, culminating with last year, where 5 bands played 30% of the music at Lockn’.  Dead & Co. played 4 sets over 2 days. Umphrey's McGee played 3 sets over 2 days, Lettuce played 3 sets over 2 days, Tedeschi Trucks Band played 2 sets over 2 days, and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead played 2 sets over 2 days. If someone wanted to go to Lockn’ “for” Dead & Co, they could. Or they could go “for” Umphrey’s. This year, you can’t go for any single band, or for any one “scene”, because that formula is not being applied. And no one single band is playing more than once.

When you add it all up, Lockn’ is straying far from the formula it has relied on the past six years. At the same time, it has focused on, and fostered, an aspect of Lockn’ that has always been unique. The collaborations. The below list is just the scheduled collaborations on the lineup. No one can expect who is going to join in on another's set during the 4 day experience. But one can assume the level of intermingling between the bands, both onstage and off, will provide a musical journey you can’t blast off too anywhere else this year.  You can check out the full schedule here and buy tickets here.
